How much can I earn as a mentor?
Mentors typically earn $20-50 per 30-minute session depending on their experience, university ranking, and expertise. You set your own rates. Top mentors who offer specialized guidance (PhD applications, specific programs, visa interviews) often charge premium rates. On average, active mentors earn $200-800 per month working 5-10 hours weekly.
How much time do I need to commit?
There's no minimum time commitment! You set your own availability. Some mentors offer just 2-3 hours per week, while others dedicate 10-15 hours. You control your calendar and can adjust availability during busy periods like exams or holidays.
What kind of students will I be mentoring?
You'll primarily mentor students from your home country or region who are applying to study abroad. They'll seek guidance on university selection, application strategy, SOP writing, scholarship applications, visa preparation, and adjusting to student life abroad.
Do I need any special qualifications or certifications?
No formal certifications required! Your main qualification is your recent experience as an international student. We value authentic, firsthand knowledge. During onboarding, we'll provide guidelines on effective mentoring and platform usage.
How and when do I get paid?
Payments are processed twice monthly (on the 1st and 15th) via PayPal, bank transfer, or your preferred method. Aspiraway takes a 20% platform fee to cover payment processing, marketing, and support. You keep 80% of your session fees.
What if a student cancels a session?
Students can cancel up to 24 hours before a session without penalty. If they cancel within 24 hours or miss the session entirely, you still receive full payment. Our system protects your time and ensures fair compensation.
Can I mentor students from any country?
Yes! While most mentors primarily help students from their home countries, you're welcome to mentor students from anywhere. Your profile will be visible to students worldwide who are interested in your university or program.
What topics can I help students with?
Common topics include: university selection, application essays/SOPs, scholarship strategies, visa interview preparation, course selection, housing advice, budgeting, cultural adjustment, and academic tips. You choose which areas to specialize in based on your strengths.
Is there training provided?
Yes! After your application is approved, you'll have a one-on-one onboarding call with our team. We'll provide mentoring best practices, platform tutorials, communication guidelines, and tips for handling difficult questions. You'll also get access to our mentor resource library.
Can I mentor while being a full-time student?
Absolutely! Most of our mentors are current students. The flexible scheduling makes it easy to fit mentoring around classes, exams, and other commitments. Many mentors conduct sessions during weekends or evenings.
What if I'm not comfortable with a question?
You're never obligated to answer questions outside your expertise or comfort zone. Be honest with students about what you can and cannot help with. If a question requires specialized knowledge (legal advice, detailed financial planning), direct them to appropriate resources.
How long does the application process take?
Most applications are reviewed within 2-3 business days. If approved, you'll schedule an onboarding call within a week. From application to going live on the platform typically takes 7-10 days.
Can I pause my mentoring if I get too busy?
Yes! You can pause your profile anytime—no questions asked. Just update your availability to "unavailable" and students won't be able to book you. Reactivate whenever you're ready to mentor again.
